JUST LIKE OLD TIMES
After doing something nice for someone else, and finishing up my interview with the Safe's employees, turning up nothing, I did something good for myself. Finally. I went to see Alisha.
Instead of opening the Gateway from the Eighth to my Third Level home, I plopped myself down on the street outside her home.
Alisha had done well for herself after our divorce. I was happy about that. The high walls, the wrought-iron gate, the manicured lawn wasn't about projecting elitismâI'm sensitive to that sort of stuff and would have called her on it in a heartbeat. Alisha isn't that type. She just appreciates orderliness and the visual aesthetic. And, goddamn, that woman worked hard and deserved it.
I pushed open the gate, stepping into her world and no longer feeling awkward about doing so like I had the first time Abaddon pushed me to take care of myself and visit my ex.
Alisha was stepping out onto the stoop, a cup of coffee in her hands, when I closed the gate. She was just bringing it to her lips when she saw me and paused. "Hey, come on in. My husband isn't here at the moment and my pipes are frozen."
"Oh, ma'am, that sounds serious. I'll see if I can fix that. I heard warming them up works wonders."
She giggled, swatted the air, and called me a "perve."
"What?" I said, climbing the stairs. "You started it."
"A lady would never," she said with faux-pretentiousness.
"No one ever said you were a lady. That's what I like about you."
She'd led me into the house and was making a beeline to the kitchen, probably about to offer me a coffee, when she stopped. She turned so quickly she caught me appreciating the view from this side. "Eyes up here, mister."
"Hey," I said, spreading my hands, "you've got your immaculate yard because you appreciate the beauty of it. I've got my own sense of beauty in the world. To each his or her own, right?"
"You're terrible."
"You're wonderful."
She rolled her eyes. "Good thing I already like you because your flirting game needs serious work. Go sit. I'll get you a cup."
"Thanks."
She puttered around on the other side of her island, bringing me the perfect cup of coffee. "I still want you to cut down on your sugars."
"Hey, I'm trying. I've got a reason to now."
If a glower could ever be playful, Alisha pulled it off in that moment. "You had reasons before. You just couldn't see them. But, I'm glad you are. Someone your age shouldn't have so much sugar in their diet."
"You're olderâ"
She swabbed her mouth with a finger, then hovered it over my cup so quickly I hadn't seen the move coming. "Finish that sentence, and I'll plunge it into your cup."
"That's a hell of a sacrifice to make just to teach me a lesson. Plus, isn't it sort of childish for someone your age?"
"Oh, you," she said, vexed. And dipped her finger into my coffee. She did it. She really did it. Damn, this woman was a light in a dark world.
